The birth of DuVernay's daughter took place on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her creative and artistic side in her early years, thanks to Aunt Denise. Aunt Denise was a nurse and was a night shift worker so she could dedicate her time to art literature and theatre. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the art form could be utilized as a tool for activism. DuVernay was raised by a mother who was socially conscious and taught her to utilize art as a method to express herself. DuVernay lived in Compton throughout her youth, however she spent every summer in the company of the extended family of her father in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father was a witness to the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama to inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. In 1990, she graduated from Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood, California. DuVernay was a college student when she started to get attracted to the field of production for broadcast journalism. Her career began as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to examine the garbage from a home belonging to a jury member. As a result of her tasks she was dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the business of publicity. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist at small production studios right out of school. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also launched several marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
